After weeks of violent aggression against Yemeni journalists, the International Federation of Journalists (IFS) issued a statement in which it calls on the government to take immediate action to protect the all members of the media, as to preserve freedom of expression and lay waste a system which bases itself on the repression and oppression.
Since October over a dozen acts of retribution against journalists have been reported and registered by IFS, a trend which is deeply troublesome, given the efforts with which revolutionaries and activist have put in since 2011 to promote a strong and independent Yemeni press.
"We stand in solidarity with our colleagues in Yemen to demand that the relevant authorities do everything in their power to increase protection for the safety and freedom of the country's journalists and media personnel," said IFJ President Jim Boumelha.
He added, "These blatant and brutal acts of violence are clear attempts to intimidate the country's media and undermine press freedom and they cannot be tolerated. Regardless of political opinion, the right to freedom of expression and media safety must be upheld.
IFS which has worked in collaboration with Yemeni rights activists as to promote stronger and fairer media body has confirmed it will participate in a national conference in Sana’a, the capital, on media safety. Moreover, IFS will sponsor a three-day workshop focusing on security training for journalists.
Following are the violations IFS recorded against Yemen press, as per IFS data. It is important to note that it is likely many more infractions went unreported for fear of reprisals or lack of awareness.
