The Turkish Embassy in Sana'a announced on Monday that starting May 1st, 2013, Yemeni nationals will not require a visa to enter Turkey and vice versa.
Yemen and Turkey governments signed an agreement back in October 2012 of mutual abolition of visas; a step which was perceived as a clear recognition of friendship and cooperation on both parts.
According to new immigration regulations Yemeni nationals in possession of legal and valid travel document (passport) will be able to enter Turkey for a period of 90 days; not to be exceeded. The visa abolition only target tourists and other short term visitors to Turkey; all other travelers, seeking to extend their stay to Turkey, such as students, businessmen or new residents will continue to require a visa to enter Turkey legally.
Widely welcomed throughout the political class as a positive move forward for Turkey and Yemen, Yemenis also received the news as a good one, especially since Yemeni nationals can often have difficulties obtaining foreign visas, hindering their freedom of travel.
Several students said they were already planing a trip to Ankara this summer to visit universities and explore their options for next year.
With Yemen and Turkey becoming ever closer, several Yemeni businessmen hope now the rapprochement will translate into Turkey becoming a greater market for Yemeni products. While Turkish products are legion in Yemen, Yemeni exporters have yet to crack the Turkish market.
