Abdul-Wahab al-Ansi, Head of al-Islah (Yemen Islamic faction) and one of the five members of the NDC overseeing committee condemned on Saturday the assassination attack on Wahid Abu Ras, a Houthi representative at Yemen National Dialogue Conference.
Officials confirmed earlier on Saturday that Abu Ras' convoy was targeted by unknown armed men dressed as Republican Guards. Eye witnesses reported the convoy fell under heavy fire.
While Abu Ras condition has yet to be clarified, officials revealed three of his bodyguards were killed in the attack addin that two of the attackers had been seriously wounded. A hunt for their arrest began in the capital.
Sheikh abdel-Malek al-Houthi, leader of the Houthis, Shia rebel group based in the northern province of Sa'da warned in a statement to the press he would not tolerate for his delegates to be targeted while attending the NDC. He insisted the incident was proof the central government was failing in guaranteeing the safety of all NDC representatives, putting a strain on negotiations.
Sheikh al-Houthi urged President Abdo Rabbo Mansour Hadi to ban all militias from Sana'a for the duration of the conference as to inspire confidence and trust.
It is important to note that prior to the NDC President Hadi banned all guns and weapons form the capital, to the exception of a handful few. 60,000 additional troops were also called in to prevent groups or factions from sabotaging the NDC.
