The Yemeni authorities have taken tight security measures to control Al-Qaeda movements 24 hours after Al-Qaeda called its operatives to use motorcycles against the authorities.
In remarks to Al-Arabiya Net, a Yemeni security official said that the security authorities have a plan to control al-Qaeda movements in five governorates around Abyan, stressing that the authorities would deal with al-Qaeda's statement seriously.
Al-Qaeda in Arab Peninsula (AQAP) issued on Friday a statement in which it demanded its members across the Yemeni governorates, in particular Hadahramout, Abyan and Shabwa, to be wary after US drones killed a number of the organization's leaders during the past months.
It cautioned its operatives against using vehicles or cell phones, urging them to use internet under coded names. Motorcycles are largely used in some Yemeni cities.
Media sources said that Al-Qaeda militants who escaped Zinjibar and Jaar set up a new stronghold in Al-Mahfad area of Abyan, an extremely rugged mountain ranges in the borders with Shabwa governorate. They further said that Al-Qaeda leaders and militants were seen heading to Al-Mahafad during the past days, affirming that they set up training camps there. The Yemeni army backed by the Public Resistance Committees comprised of tribesmen could dislodge Al-Qaeda from main towns in Abyan such as Jaar, Zinjibar and Shaqra. Meanwhile, an Omani newspaper said on Tuesday that al-Qaeda operatives left Yemen to the neighboring state of Oman after they were attacked in the South Yemen.
The newspaper quoted the Secretary-General of the Foreign Ministry Badar Al-Boseedi as saying that Al-Qaeda operatives infiltrated to Oman and actions were taken to pursue them.
