Only 26% of the people have access to drinking water and healthcare and 42% of the people have access to electricity, a minister said Wednesday at the meeting of Friends of Yemen in the Saudi capital Riyadh.
Introducing the Friends to the 2012-2014 transitional program for stability and development, minister for planning and international cooperation, Muhammad Al-Sady, said the 2011 events have largely aggravated the overall situation in Yemen.
The country has been suffering from sabotage attacks on power supply lines and oil and gas pipelines, political unrest as well as alarming security disorders, which have resulted in deterioration of basic services, he said.
Many Yemeni cities including the capital Sanaa have been plunged into darkness for more than 20 hours a day in most cases amid persistent attacks on power supply lines along the Sanaa-Marib road.
Fuel shortages due to the several-month shutdown of the Marib-Ras Isa oil pipeline, which was repeatedly attacked last year, have boosted. A lack of diesel has sent some electric stations out of commission.
The 2011 events have been behind the worst ever impact on the national economy, leading to budget challenges due to the sharp decline in revenues and aggravating the humanitarian suffering, he said.
The power-sharing government is facing big challenges and the unrest impact is expected to continue through the few years to come, he said.
Unemployment is one of the big challenges facing development and political and security stability since it highest rates are among the youths.
The Yemeni youths make up 52.9% of the jobless in the country and the unemployment rate among the people between 25-59 years old is 44.4%, he said.
The transitional program included four parts focused on restoring political an security stability, economic recovery and improvement to the investment climate and urgent needs and measures during the transitional period.
It expected the gross domestic product to grow by 2.8% during 2012-2013.
