Yemen is going to participate in London Somalia Conference due to be held on Thursday in UK to pull together international efforts.
Upon his departure, Yemeni Foreign Minister Abu Baker al-Qirbi, who will represents Yemen in the conference, said the conference will discuss the Somali case and its security and political implications on the Horn of Africa and the world in general.
The discussions will be based on seven headings: Security, Political Process, Local Stability, Counter-Terrorism, Humanitarian, and International Coordination, according to Al-Qiribi.
Senior representatives from over 40 governments and multi-lateral organizations will come together in London with the aim of delivering a new international approach to Somalia. They will discuss how the international community can step-up its efforts to tackle both the root causes and effects of the problems in the country.
"Despite the efforts of the African Union, the United Nations and the international community, international policy towards Somalia is not succeeding. After 20 years of sliding backwards, Somalia needs a step-change in effort – both from the international community, but also Somalia’s political leaders, "the conference statements said.
Yemen has been severely hit by the Somalia crisis as hundreds of thousands of Somalis keeps on smuggling into the poor Gulf state despite the dangers the face in the sea while smuggling, adding a burden to the already struggling economy.
Moreover the Somali Piracy, which has thrived in the past two years, has affected Yemen to a great extent as they[ the pirates] keeps on attacking commercial ships in the Gulf of Aden, making some avert transiting in Yemeni shores and therefore costing the country great economic losses.
Somali Pirates have repeatedly attacked Yemeni fishers, abducting them and confiscating their boats in Yemeni territorial waters.
