Senior Yemeni officials told Yemen Post that Canadian Nexen was involved in large corruption files, and was willing to give millions of dollars in bribes to Yemeni officials to help them stay in control of block 14.
The block is considered one of the most prestigious oil blocks in Yemen.
Yemen Post did not take such claims softly and decided to investigate deeper in this case. The Post is seeking to get a hold of concrete information from those directly involved in Nexen's work operation in Yemen.
"Nexen was willing to do everything to remain in Block 14. It was a profitable block with billions of dollars in profits," said one senior official.
The official said that Yemen was losing billions of dollars if Nexen was allowed to continue it's operations in the block.
He added, "Nexen did everything needed to ensure that everything goes in it's favor over the last 15 years. There were no limits or exceptions."
Last year, the ministerial cabinet in Yemen voted to not allow Nexen to renew its contract in the block.
Block 14 was handed over to PetroMasila, a local company that was created to takeover the block, after Nexen's contract expired less than a month ago.
Experts fear that those involved in the Nexen corruption will also be major corrupt players in PetroMasila and are calling for changes in all senior posts and those responsible for the oil services.
Canadian Nexen is still in control of block 51 in Yemen.
Yemen Post will continue investigating on this case.
