The European and US ambassadors to Yemen met with the leaders of the Opposition yesterday in their continuing bid to promote the signature of the GCC brokered proposal which would enunciate the terms of the country's power-transfer and the departure from the presidency of Ali Abdullah Saleh after 33 years.
The ambassadors are trying to conciliate both the Opposition and the ruling party as the latter so far has refused to sign the proposal, arguing that it was not only unconstitutional but contrary to their wishes.
The ruling party is however now in favor of transferring the power to Vice-President Abdo Rabbu Mansoor Hadi as announced in its latest statement to the press. It is the first time that the party, which Saleh presides, has expressed the eventuality of the president's departure in such clear terms.
The spokesperson for the National Yemeni Council, told the press that the meeting had been positive and that the leaders of the Opposition had reiterated their willingness to implement and respect the terms of the power-transfer as expressed in the UN Security Council resolution 2014.
The resolution which was adopted unanimously calls on Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down from power immediately and to agree to the terms of the GCC proposal in exchange of legal immunity from future prosecution.
Despite many declarations and promises over the past few months that he would indeed walk away from the presidency, Saleh has times and times over backed down at the last minute invoking one excuse or another.
