Gerald Fierstein, the U.S ambassador to Yemen met early this afternoon with defected General Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar. Since his defection in March this year, the General has vowed to protect and defend the revolutionary movement which demands the immediate departure from power of President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
Mohsen’s office told the Yemen Post that the two men discussed the current situation, studying ways to move the negotiating process forward. The U.S ambassador congratulated Yemen’s most powerful military men on his restraint in the crisis, adding that his attitude from the beginning was commendable.
The General warned against the regime’s provocations, saying that cutting off people from basic utilities such as electricity, water and fuel was only feeding popular resentment against Saleh and his loyalists. The General also stressed that besieging the capital, Sana’a by blocking all its access roads could be interpreted as a step forward a military conflict.
Fierstein repeated that he wished for the GCC brokered proposal to be agreed upon by both parties since he felt that it was Yemen’s best chance to solve the crisis peacefully.
However, since the ruling party is proven reluctant to discuss the adjusted Gulf brokered agreement which would if signed, see the resignation of president Saleh within the next three months with the formation of a coalition government, things could very well degenerate into something much more somber.
Vice-president Hadi is said to be frustrated at the lack of willingness of his fellow- ruling party members to actively negotiate a way out of the crisis, warning against an escalation in violence, since tribes were believed to be gathering their troops a few kilometers north of the capital, Sana’a.
