Tens of antigovernment protesters were injured when republican guards and central seucirty forces intercepted a massive demonstration in Yemen's western province of Hodeida on Sunday.
Locals said the forces fired live bullets and teargas at protesters, sending tens of them to hospitals. The protesters welcomed the transitional council announced by the youth-led revolution council in the capital Sana'a on Saturday, urged to escalate protests to make the month-long uprising a success and condemn the crimes of the regime.
Massive demonstrations were held in Yemeni cities on Sunday in response to the call of the youth-led protesters who urged all the Yemeni people to turn July 17th anniversary as a popular rage day or like many liked to call 'setback day'.
President Ali Abdullah Saleh, being treated in Saudi Arabia after he survived an assassination plot inside his palace last month, came to power on July 17, 1978.
The demonstrators called for the departure of the remaining officials of the Saleh regime and rejected any external mandate or interventions in Yemen.
In Taiz, the protesters also condemned the continuous attacks by the army on some districts in the southern province and welcomed the transitional council formed.
