Clashes are currently taking place between armed people and the army in the outskirts of Yemen's southern province of Taiz, as the situation in downtown the city remained calm.
"I hear right now gunfights and big explosions such as bombs, artillery shells or RPGs but on the outskirts of Taiz," said Abdul Salam Abdullah, an educator in al Qaida district.
Locals in downtown Taiz said the situation today was normal and that gunmen who have recently been seen on the streets disappeared.
"In the last few days, battles erupted at night. They were fierce and we could not sleep because of the big explosions," said Mukhtar Muhammad, a vendor.
Large numbers of the security forces and gunmen have recently blanketed the city's streets with sporadic battles reported after armed crowds from the districts of Sharab and Sami'a vowed to face the deadly crackdown on the youth-led uprising.
Lately, the forces and pro-regime armed groups broke into Al-Thawra Hospital and set up their positions their to attack the freedom square and other areas killing and injuring many people.
There were also people, believed to be regime supporters, damaging and looting public offices.
Meantime, the youths started today a campaign to clean the city which has been experiencing month-long street protests and sit-ins to call for the ouster of the regime.
The campaign comes with the youth activities after the cleanliness authorities failed to appear and assume their responsibilities and after activists warned of a health disaster if not action is not taken.
The youth are also raising awareness among the traders and shopkeepers about contributing to keeping the city clean.
