Planes carried out an airstrike in the southeastern province of Shabwa but there were no casualties because the attack took place in an unpopulated area, Yemen Post quoted a local source in the district of Al-Rawdha as saying on Friday.
Jet fighters flew over the Al-Hawta area and struck the Saqah Mountain early today, after two soldiers were killed and three others were injured in an RPG attack on a military vehicle in the province on Thursday.
Security sources were quoted as saying Thursday's attack bore the hallmarks of Al-Qaeda which claimed recent attacks against public security and intelligence headquarters and officers as well as checkpoints and patrols in southeastern and southern regions.
Also, three helicopters landed on the mountain and security patrols surrounded the area in a security move that raised fears of the people who started leaving their homes to avoid a tragedy like the one that occurred in late 2009 in Abyan Province when dozens including civilians were killed during terror raids.
Families headed to Aden and Mukalla amid increasing sorties over the area.
The development comes amid the intensified operations against Al-Qaeda throughout the country and after masked people set up checkpoints at Shabwa entries preventing the people from getting in.
In recent months, Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula AQAP stepped up attacks on forces and security offices in Shabwa, Lahj, Dhale, Abyan and Aden, and sometimes fought the forces, as it did in the Lowder district, Abyan, last month. Many were killed during attacks and battles including civilians, soldiers and terrorist suspects.
It also vowed to continue the fight against the government in retaliation against attacks on innocents and its leaders and members.
