The Specialized Penal Court in Yemen's eastern province of Hadramout sentenced on Tuesday five Yemenis and three Africans to death after convicting them of trafficking and possessing drugs. The Africans were a Tanzanian, a Somali and a Kenyan.
The eight were charged with trafficking and possessing about 1.7 tonnes of drugs. The verdict also ruled to display their bodies in public.
They were arrested last year off Alshihr city, Hadramout, with the drugs quantities.
On the other hand, the court sentenced 6 Somali pirates to up to 12 years in jail each and ruled to deport them after serving the terms to their country.
The Africans were convicted of committing pirate attacks and burglary against ships passing in the region. It also sentenced a Somali to two years in prison on piracy charges.
The verdict also ruled to confiscate the tools the group had used to carry out attacks including a boat and weapons.
Moreover, the court delivered a verdict in the case of 15 suspects in killing police officers, attempts to murder soldiers and battling the authorities.
Four were sentenced up to 15 years in prison each; nine got 7 years each and another received a five-year sentence. While the court sentenced one of the group to the period he had spent in jail due to his age.
The group was convicted of abducting and killing officer Muhammad Abdul Rahman Al-Shatiry and fighting the authorities besides other criminal charges.
