Protests were staged in Yemen's southern Lahj provinces that condemned the civilian deaths from recent terror operations in the provinces of Abyan and Shabwa.
Thousands of people poured onto streets of the capital and other areas in Lahj denouncing the unjustified killings of civilians and urging the release of those who were arrested in connection with the southern movement this year.
There were no reports of incidents as no clashes between police and demonstrators happened.
The photos of the exiled former after-unity vice president Ali Salim Al-Beidh and former president of the democratic republic in the south, currently living in Syria and heading the Arab Strategic Studies Center Ali Nasser Muhammad were seen in some protests.
After touring streets, the demonstrators settled at the Martyr Square where speeches were delivered highlighting the killing of dozens of civilians including children and women in last Thursday's operation against an Al-Qaeda training site in Almahfad district, Abyan and this Thursday's operation against terrorists in eastern Shabwa.
A communiqué was issued at the protests that urged the Arab League and the United Nations to intervene and form impartial panels to probe what was described as a terrible carnage by the authorities against the people in the two provinces.
However, the communiqué reiterated the struggle for better rights and resolving the standing issues in the south will continue peacefully but rejecting a dialog with the government.
It, furthermore, urged civil society organizations to intervene and help an unconditional release of the arrests in connection with the movement.
Anti-terrorism troops launched last Thursday and today two successful operations against Al-Qaeda hideouts and training sites in Abyan and Shabwa killing and arresting scores of terrorist suspects.
Last Thursday's operation coincided with another operation in Arhab district, Sana'a, and the outcomes of the two operations were about 34 terrorists killed and other 29 suspects arrested.
Early today, a fresh operation was carried out in Shabwa killing at least 30 suspected Qaeda terrorist including leaders. Some reports noted Nasser Al-Wuhaishi, the leader of Al-Qaeda in Arabian Peninsula was among the dead. Other top leaders were also said dead.
