Egypt is said to have provided Yemen with information over Iran’s intelligence plans targeting it and other Arab and African states in the region, Arab diplomatic sources were cited by the Akhbar Al-Youm Newspaper as saying.
Yemeni diplomatic sources were also quoted as saying that Egypt, through its Foreign Minister Abu Al-Gheit who visited Yemen last week, handed Yemen details on Iran’s spy activities in the region and the U.S. vision over the Iranian project, mainly targeting the Arab.
The details included information on Iranian moves within the Yemeni communities in a number of Arab and other Asian states including Egypt, Oman, Syria and Bahrain.
Moreover, Egypt disclosed confessions of Yemeni expatriates in Egypt to holding meetings with Iranian diplomats in which they were invited to join pro-Iran armed gangs such as the Houthi movement in Yemen’s Northern Province of Saada and a meeting that gathered Former President of the People’s Democratic Republic in south Yemen Ali Nasser Mohammed, living in Syria, and Iran’s ambassador to Cairo.
Earlier deputy editor-in-chief of the Egyptian Newspaper of Al-Ayyam said Iran was recruiting Yemeni students in Egypt for the insurgency in Yemen.
Hassan Abu Talib, a specialist in Yemen affairs, also said that some of the students traveled to Iran and others were visited by Iranian officials and bodies in Egypt.
The Cultural Attaché of the Iranian embassy in Cairo was mostly involved in arranging meetings between Yemeni students and Iranians, he added.
Yemen has many times accused Iran of supporting the insurgents in the north, without a direct indication to the Iranian official side.
During a sixth war with the rebels, Yemen said it has collected much evidence on Iranian support to the Houthis.
Recently the U.S. announced it seriously predicts possible Iranian support for the insurgents in Yemen, warning of Iranian regional schemes as it said Iran has proved it is not cooperative.
Egypt and Yemen have seen their relations improve after the wake of the sixth war in Sa’ada as regional efforts strengthen in order to limit the spread of Iranian influence in the Gulf of Arabia.
