Director of Seismic Monitoring Center, Naji Al-Hitar said that the expectations of large earthquakes in our country might not be scientifically true.
He, further, pointed out that the Center has recorded dozens of daily events of small and medium-sized earthquakes that enterprise in various regions in Yemen, mostly in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea.
He assured that, since Yemen’s worst earthquake which occurred in 1982, killing thousands and leaving another thousand homeless, there hadn’t been violent earthquakes in the country.
In related news, local sources from Amran province revealed that people in Al-Ashah fled their homes because of a minor earthquake on Friday that shook the region. They also mentioned that villages are being evacuated as a precaution.
On December 13th, 1982, violent earthquake struck Thamar Province and more than 3000 were killed and extensive physical damage to traditional stones habitations took place.
The regions of Yemen most prone to earthquakes are Thamar, Gulf of Aden, Hadramout, and Jabal Al-Tair in the Red Sea regional and local seismologists said, adding that Sana’a is not vulnerable.
Areas down towards Jizan and Yemen are the most vulnerable regions for earthquake, said Professor Abdullah Al-Amri, director of the Seismic Studies Center in Jeddah.
He said that the Red Rea experiences a lot of earthquakes so building in cities near the sea should be built with a thick layer of wet salt in order to absorb quakes.
Three active fault lines meet in the southern part of the Red Sea, one heading toward the Indian Ocean, the other moving along the Red Sea, and the third going toward Somalia, Al-Amri, said, adding that the three fault lines intersect at one point resulting in a lot of seismic activity.
