Battles between the Yemeni forces and the Houthi militants renewed in some of the cities which have been lately retaken from the militants on Wednesday.
Fierce overnight battles broke out in the eastern and northern parts of Taiz after Houthi reinforcements arrived after days of fighting on the road linking the city with the north, sources within the popular resistance said.
The Houthis are shelling mortars and rockets on the forces and populated areas in an attempt to retake the city which fell in the hands of the forces in recent days, they said, adding that civilians have been killed and injured in the Houthi indiscriminate shelling.
Houthi reinforcements have also arrived in the cities of Lahj and Dhali which the forces with support from the Saudi-led military coalition liberated from the Houthis.
The two cities are experiencing fresh battles coinciding with ongoing airstrikes on the Houthis in them and other cities including Baidha and Marib, well-informed sources said.
The Arab coalition has been bombing the Houthis and forces loyal to the former president since March.
In the meanwhile, TVs said today the UN envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh has launched a new effort in order to end the months-long armed conflict in the country politically.
Cheikh is touring regional and foreign countries and is expected to arrive in Riyadh soon to discuss with Saudi and Yemeni officials a proposal which may pave the way for a political solution to the Yemeni crisis, reports said.
The proposal includes terms and demands put forward by the Houthi militants during recent talks on in Oman, they said, pointing out that the government insists on adherence to the UN resolution 2216 as the main guarantee for a successful peaceful solution.
The resolution called on the Houthis to cede power, return weapons, withdraw from cities and come back to the political process without pre-conditions.
