The Saudi army and the Yemeni Houthi militants on Saturday exchanged heavy rocket fire on the border between the two countries, local sources in Saada governorate, the Houthi stronghold, said.
The Saudi forces shelled many Houthi camps and positions in Saada and the nearby Hajja governorate and the Houthi responded firing rockets on Saudi areas in the Jazan city, they added.
The firing coincided with Saudi-led airstrikes against the Houthis in several cities besides Saada and Hajja including the capital Sanaa, Amran and Taiz.
Last night, Yemeni forces loyal to the former president Saleh and Houthi militants launched an attempted attack on Saudi camps in the Najran city killing around four officers and soldiers, Saudi media said today.
The attack was the heaviest since the Houthis started skirmishes against Saudi border sites in response to the Saudi-led Arab military against them, the reports said, pointing out that the Saudi forces repelled the attack killing dozens of Yemeni forces and militants.
Moreover, the Saudi army destroyed in the air a scud missile which was launched from Saada and its launcher vehicle, they added.
The military operation has destroyed most of the Houthi strategic weapons mostly ballistic missiles and weapon and munition depots as well as military camps since March 26.
In addition, the Saudi-led coalition has been backing the pro-government forces with weapons and raids that have helped them beat the Houthis and pro-Saleh forces and advance on key frontlines.
