Dr. Ulfat al-Duba’I, a member of Yemen constitution drafting committee confirmed on Monday that according to projections, Yemenis could expect the first draft of their new constitution to be completed within the next four months. The drafting of a new constitution will mark the country’s last transfer of power stage and close the book on Yemen’s institutional overall, a process which has been painstakingly slow, notwithstanding the many hurdles and political roadblocks it had to overcome.
While of course much still needs to be done, it looks as if Yemen is making great stride in the right direction.
The constitution drafting committee which is headed by Ismail al-Wazir, will reform Yemen’s constitution in keeping with NDC resolutions as to reflect a new political, social and institutional reality.
The only country of the Arab Spring movement to have peacefully transitioned to a modern civil state, officials have said to hold great hopes for the Yemeni nation as diplomacy proved it could be more powerful than weapons, an important breakthrough for the otherwise belligerent nation.
Al-Duba’i noted keenly that so far no issue had arose to slowdown the drafting process, an omen she said bode well.
But if state officials want to remain upbeat and positive, political analysts have warned that Yemen’s deep state might seek to derail or overtake the constitutional drafting committee in order to control change as well as ensure that they will not lose too much ground. Experts have noted it is likely President Abdo Rabbo Mansour Hadi will have to weigh heavily on the process to ensure its goes smoothly.
