Following a general meeting on Sunday the executive board of trade for Yemen Civil Aviation and Meteorology warned that it would consider implementing a general strike in order to force the central government to address issues of chronic corruption, systematic thievery and abuses of power.
The board has repeatedly asked the state to ban certain officials from interfering with their dealings as such officials have only ever thought to promote their interests over that of the nation, while driving Yemen Civil Aviation to the ground.
While Yemen is no stranger to cases of corruption and other brigandage since bribery has almost been declared a national sport, post-revolution Yemen has been trying to distance itself from its shady past and instead stand for the good of the people over the interests of handful few.
It is in such a spirit that the executive board has called for drastic actions.
Board officials s have in a statement published to the local press, explained they wish to put an end to nepotism, and revert to an employment system based solely on one’s merits alone as opposed to one’s family connections. The Yemen Aviation and Meteorology board has complained that old tendencies to only hire the mighty and powerful has weakened the organization, leaving it wide open to failure and mis-management through incompetence. Given the responsibilities of such an institution, the board warned that turning a blind eye would simply be criminal and unpatriotic.
Union representatives seek the following: the payment of all employees’ benefits, the establishment of a system whereby the Ministry of Finance would not be able to interfere with the management of the Civil Aviation body, that all new employee be approved by the Prime Minister upon recommendation of the board, that all tribal militias be promptly removed from the Civil Aviation’s grounds without exception as to restore peace and stability.
