2011 Nobel Peace prize laureate once again voiced her opposition to US drone policy in Yemen by qualifying such strikes as "unacceptable", adding that they also undermined Yemen's territorial sovereignty.
This is not the first time that Karman, a well-known advocate for human rights and democracy in Yemen has spoken against the use of drones in the impoverished nation. She has often labeled drones as illegal, arguing that such interferences within Yemen territories in populated areas stand in direct violation of humans rights and international laws. She was quoted by several media as saying, " drones are worse than the terrorist activities of individuals and groups.”
Always one to take matters of human rights advocacy to social networks, Karman actively decried Washington's pounding of Yemen on Twitter, calling for an immediate halt of all strikes.
In line with other anti-drone activists, Karman noted that she believed such strikes would only drive a further wedge in between Yemenis and the central government as more civilians will get caught in the cross-fire.
Ever since August 3rd terror alert the Pentagon has authorized an unprecedented number of drone strikes across several provinces of Yemen: Marid, Shabwa, Lajh and Hadhramawt, which prompted strong reactions throughout the rights community.
Only yesterday, on Monday, two people were killed in a US-led drone strike in the southern province of Shabwa, bringing the total of casualties to an estimated 40 over the past two weeks alone.
