In a move which was replicated across the Middle East region, Yemenis came together on Tuesday to condemn Israel military intervention on Syria, decrying the idea the state of Israel could use the current crisis to push its political agenda and secure yet more lands in and around the Golan Heights, an area which Tel Aviv characterized as strategic in the region.
In Sana'a, the capital and Ibb (eastern province of Yemen) hundreds of Yemeni demonstrated their condemnation, professing their support of the people of Syria and their refusal of further Israeli-led military strikes.
Banners were raised carrying slogans warning against the Zionist agenda and Israel's thirst for control over the Levant.
Several protesters said they would tolerate such a blatant violation of Syria's territorial hegemony to be tolerated, calling on the international community to intervene immediately by taking sanctions against th =e Jewish state.
Israel conducted a series of airstrikes against Syria, near the capital Damascus under allegations it was targeting Hezbollah military warehouses.
Already the UN through its Secretary General, Ban Ki moon called for restraints."The secretary-general urges respect for national sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries in the region, and adherence to all relevant Security Council resolutions."
While it is unlikely the situation in Syria will have much effect on Yemeni politics, some security analysts have warned that the sectarian nature of the conflict could however create a backlash in Yemen and intensify already heightened sentiments in the impoverished nation, namely amid religious-political factions: the Houthis (Shia political party) and al-Islah (Sunni political party).
