The UN Security Council has approved dispatching an UN mission during the few upcoming days with the aim of evaluating Yemen's political settlement and implementation of the UN resolutions 2014 and 2051, Yemeni officials said.
They said that the mission will be led by the UN Envoy to Yemen Jamal Benomar, affirming that it will prepare a final report about the political process, difficulties and challenges.
The sources singled out that the US Security Council refrained from issuing a sanctions resolution against Yemeni sides that impede the political settlement after the United States demanded that.
The UN Security Council held a session on Yemen on September 18, expressing concern over a campaign to "undermine" Yemen's interim government and a widening humanitarian crisis in the country.
The council stressed the importance of holding a "comprehensive and inclusive national dialogue without delay, in order to lay the foundations for a stable and unified Yemen, sourced affirmed.
The UN Envoy to Yemen Jamal Benomar who visited Yemen in the mid of September voiced concern at "ongoing attempts to undermine the transition process, cautioning against imposing sanctions against those who impede the settlement.
Benomar said, during his visit to Yemen, that immunity given to Saleh by Yemen's parliament contradicts the UN resolutions 2014 and 2015, affirming that the international law does not allow to give immunity.
Media sources said that diplomats from several nations backing Yemen’s political transition recommended international sanctions against loyalists of the former president, southern secessionists and members of the largest Islamist group for undermining the country’s path to democracy.
