The current crisis the country is facing only shows the international community that this regime is not able to stabilize one of the most strategic countries in the world, Yemen.
With every day that passes the situation in Yemen worsens and a northern movement begins to exist.
Back in 2006 when the southern movement started, the government called them rebels, while they were then only demanding simple rights. Because of a corrupt regime, those rights were not given, therefore, forcing the movement to start demanding a separate state.
Today in 2011, northerners are not demanding separation, but opposition is fueling the country, demanding that the ruling party steps down before it forces the country to enter a civil war.
Talking to numerous high ranking officials this week, I warned them that protests will spread to every part of the country and on a daily basis. Their reply was the same that was heard in the south. They said, “Those protesting are only people who have no future and are rebels.”
To those officials I say, look at how the south developed into a chaotic state because of your lack of responsibility. If this continues, the north will witness a movement far greater than the south, and the government will continue to use force against people, thinking that it will help. Look at the Houthi movement, with every action of force the government used, they only became stronger. The same can be said about the southern separatists.
This week, over a dozen northerners were imprisoned because of participating in protests. This will only outrage people more. People are not protesting because they want more, but rather because they are asking for one of the basic essentials of life. They are asking for justice. The government in its current situation cannot give them justice due to the extensive corruption in all governmental institutions.
Yemen will see a new kind of revolution, and change will take place very soon. If not, protests will not stop and chaos will spread to not only Yemen, but the entire region. It’s all in Saleh’s hands now.
