The Yemeni government is negotiating with donors seeking to get support to establish a special court to handle corruption issues, Belquis Abu Osba, deputy chairman of the supreme national Anticorruption commission SNACC, said on Tuesday.
In a statement quoted by the September 26 website, the official said the court will help deliver quick rulings on corruption issues, amid calls by officials and specialists to upgrade the national anticorruption system to decide on serious corruption cases delayed at courts.
Senior officials of SNACC including the chairman, Ahmed Al-Anesi, met earlier Tuesday with Wael Zakout, the WB Country Manager for Yemen, and Arun Arya, Senior Public Sector Management Specialist at the Bank.
The meeting discussed the bilateral cooperation between the Yemeni government and the WB, according to the website.
There was a focus on how donors can contribute to creating the court and amending the national laws to fight corruption topped by the law on senior state posts and the anticorruption law, it said.
The meeting stressed the importance to make fighting corruption the first priority during the transitional period, it added.
Arya affirmed the WB will continue to support SNACC to accomplish its responsibilities and improve the integrity and transparency system in Yemen, it continued.
