Minister of Electricity and Energy dismissed Wednesday the idea of producing nuclear energy in the country, saying it was not time to use nuclear power to deal with energy problems, mainly daily electricity cuts.
However, Minister Awadh Al-Socotri affirmed the government has plans to produce wind and thermal energy instead.
He said the government is about to sign deals with the World Bank and the Islamic Development Bank to construct a wind-power plant in Makha province.
Regarding daily electricity cuts, Al-Socotri said the main reason for the cuts, almost four times a day, is the existent gap between the soaring demand and generator capacity.
He said the presumed age of the current generators is about to expire while the public demand for energy increases over time.
On the other hand, experts from the US Earth Water Company are considering the possibility of producing water from the air in Yemeni areas suffering from water shortages.
The expert team said they will, during their current visit to the country, review techniques the company uses to produce water from the air and technology used to solve water shortages problems.
Head of the team said they will try to work together with their partners in Yemen to establish effective solutions to ease the suffering of many areas in Yemen where small water quantities are available.
