Army aircrafts with the support of US drones bombed al-Qaeda whereabouts in the southern province of Lahj, killing at least 38 militants and wounding dozens others over the last 48 hours, local security source told Yemen Post on Tuesday.
The intensive air and land missile and artillery bombardment on the posts of Ansar al-Sharia or partisans of Islamic law, the al-Qaeda wing in the country, comes after the group attacked military posts earlier in the week.
The army delivered very painful strikes for the militants in Lahj, and is adamant to continue attacks until they are forced out, added the source.
Associated Press said that the governmental intensification of the air and land attacks are a part of an effort to reclaim strategic locations seized by al-Qaeda in the southern provinces of Abyan, Shabwa and Lahj.
The attacks came only two days after the militants in Lahj launched two surprise attacks targeting army brigade in the province. Their attacks on Saturday has left more than 30 soldiers killed.
A local tribal source in Lahj told Yemen Post anonymously that if it was not for the American drones that keep roaming the sky of the south in search for the militants the terrorists would have taken control of the whole brigade in the province and may be the whole province as well.
Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula(AQAP) has undisputedly expanded its foothold in the southern and southeastern parts of the poor Gulf state, taking an advantage of unrest that has gripped it.
