Hundreds of thousands of Yemenis participated in the country’s first ever day without Qat campaign.
The campaign first started in the beginning days of 2012 by youth bloggers using social media as their main source of media to spread their message.
One key blogger was behind the idea. Hind Aleryani, a Yemeni activist living in Lebanon initiated the campaign, and helped push all sides to make the campaign a success.
“We thank Hind and all the great bloggers for their great efforts in seeking change to the better,” said Hakim Almasmari, editor in chief of Yemen Post.
“She continued pushing until her message reached millions of people in a short time period. Yemen needs such people,” Almasmari added.
The message so powerful, that Vice President AbduRabu Hadi was informed of it.
Senior politicians and academics participated in the campaign in support of the youth bloggers.
Yemen Post played a strong role in spreading the message in support of the youth activists and bloggers.
Qat is a leaf narcotic, which is chewed, by millions of Yemenis daily, and is a strong reason for the weak economic situation in the country.
