The military council is finally formed after a delay that lasted more than on week.
Vice President Abdu Rabu Hadi came up with a presidential decree forming a 14 member military council whose duties will be to reform the military.
The members of the council will be evenly divided between the government and the opposition parties.
Yemen’s opposition said that no progress would go forward unless the council is formed and the ruling family control over the military dissolves.
“If the ruling family still controls the military months from now, the council is useless,” said Ali Jaradi, a political analyst and prominent writer in Yemen.
According to the power transfer deal signed in Riyadh on November 24, the council was supposed to be created within five days of the signing.
Opposition parties welcomed the formation of the military council and are expected to announce the new unified government within 24 hours.
The ruling general People Congress party welcomed the council and hoped that it will lead to putting an end to the security problems the country has been facing since January.
