Germany lifted on Saturday part of a ban it had imposed on all flights from Yemen, saying all airlines companies including the Yemenia Airways can resume passenger flights to it.
German ambassador to Yemen Michael Klor-Berchtold told Transport Minister Khalid Al-Wazeer at their meeting today that his country decided to lift the part of the ban on passenger flights, but the ban on cargo planes remains in effect.
Passenger airliners originating in Yemen can land in Germany and fly over its territory without any problems, the envoy said.
The decision was made in the light of the recommendations of the German technical team which arrived in Yemen last week to familiarize with air security measures at Sana'a International Airport and steps Yemen has taken after recent mail bombs, he made clear.
The team arrived here upon a Yemeni proposal after Yemen had said the German ban on all flights through it was a collective and illogical punishment of the Yemeni people.
Yemen hailed the understanding of the European country and its quick response to its proposal over lifting the ban that was imposed early this month after German authorities discovered a suspicious package, coinciding with explosive parcels intercepted while on their way to the U.S., passed through its western part.
