A girl child died and tens of families were displaced after their homes were completely destroyed by heavy rain that lashed Abdul Kori Island in the Scocotra Archipelago in the last few days, the Interior Ministry reported on Sunday.
According to a preliminary counting of damages, one village, called Alajooz, was completely ravaged; and 8 homes were destroyed in Alalya village, 9 homes in Alsawahi and Beit Eisa villages and 8 homes in Beit Saleh and Aljame'a villages.
Also, 20 boats were destroyed.
Helicopters were used to help the affected people who are now living at permanent refugee shelters at schools and governmental buildings in Socotra.
On the other hand, the crew of a Panamanian ship that sank off the archipelago has arrived at Socotra airport.
The 23 members of the crew from different nationalities were transported by a helicopter that belonged to one of the British warships fighting piracy in the region, officials said. They would travel to Dubai today, they added.
Few days ago, the ship that originated in Ajman in the United Arab Emirates sank in bad weather while en route to Somalia. It was carrying 5500 tonnes of various products.
In recent days, the Yemeni National Meteorological Center has renewed its warning for the people in the eastern and southern provinces of rough sea, saying the tide may rise due to weather dipping that usually causes torrential rain.
