Tens of protestors were arrested on Sunday during protests in south Yemen coinciding with the donor conference that concluded today in Riyadh.
Protests continued for a second day in Lahj and Dhale provinces, but no violence or clashes with anti-riot police dispatched in large numbers in the two governorates were reported though police fired live bullets and tear gas to break up rallies.
Demonstrators lifted green placards and put stones on streets to thwart the movement of security patrols that were dispatched to streets. As usual, they chanted anti-unity slogans and condemned abuses by the government.
The protests come in response to the call of the secessionist movement to send a message to the two-day conference and the world about the issue of the south as the movement seeks separation of the south.
Smoke billowed in the air after demonstrators burned tires in streets and normal life was paralyzed.
Cell phone grid has been cut off in the two governorates since the protests started and Sana'a-Dhale road was closed as well.
The protests started Saturday as the conference kicked off with demonstrators demanding to support the issue of the south amid separation bids.
Meanwhile, police director in Dhale Ghazi Ali Muhsen said that security authorities in the city arrested 21 rioters that he labeled as ' separatists and destructive elements.'
Guns were seized with the rioters, flags of the former Democratic People's Republic of the south and the arrests took place while separatists were chanting anti-unity slogans and inciting violence, according to the police director.
