A soldier was killed and three others were injured in an exchange of gunfire when police broke up a rally in which people in Yemen's business capital of Aden gathered to express their solidarity with Al-Ayyam Newspaper, security sources said on Monday.
The paper's office in Crate city was closed after reporting the casualties, they said.
Eyewitnesses told media outlets that police imposed a security cordon around the office in an effort to end the rally and during the measure the exchange of gunfire took place leading to the casualties.
Tens of academics, politicians and students attended the rally called by civil society organizations, eight months after the publication was suspended by authorities in connection with separation and subversion rhetoric.
Independent sources added that anti-riot troops attacked the house of editor-in-chief of Al-Ayyam and the office and then shootout occurred. The situation remains tense in the area, they said, though no further details were available.
The widely-read newspaper was among about other 8 publications halted by authorities last year when the south was hit by anti-unity protests that turned violent with demonstrators clashing with police and urging better living rights.
Other measures were taken including establishing the criticized-press court.
Many were reported killed, hurt and arrested in the protests.
