The rebels in northern Yemen welcomed on Saturday President Saleh's ceasefire call, with the spokesman for the rebel leader saying it was positive and a step towards peace and stability in the area.
Regarding the conditions that Saleh reiterated were necessary for a ceasefire between the army and the rebels, in a sporadic war since 2004, the spokesman said they had accepted the five conditions but on condition that the military operations against them be terminated forever.
Once the war ends, we are ready for a dialog, he said in a press release.
We many times announced we are ready to withdraw from all Saada districts, remove checkpoints in roads and come to table to find a radical solution to the issue but our initiatives did not meet positive reaction, he said.
The current response to the call comes within our awareness there should not be further bloodshed, to preserve the people's lives and properties and avoid more troubles at a time when the country is passing through many junctures, he said.
However, he affirmed that they never targeted Saudi lands but after they directly came under attack by Saudis.
Earlier President Saleh appealed the opposition to come for dialog and the Houthi rebels and Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula to stop violence and contribute to establishing peace in the region.
In the editorial of the state-run Al-Thawra Daily on Friday, Saleh urged all forces in the country to make up their minds in the best interest of Yemen and hoped that 2010 be the year of tolerance.
He recited the August-announced conditions for a ceasefire with the rebels, saying once the Houthis accept the conditions, the state is ready to stretch its hand for peace.
