As reports are coming through that al-Qaeda managed to seize control over several villages near and around Mukalla this Friday, (the regional capital of Hadhramawt), south-east of the country, security officials in al-Baydha (situated north of Abyan and Aden) are warning that there too al-Qaeda operatives have moved to the offensive, in a bid for control.
Gunmen linked to the Islamic terror group attacked on Friday a military outpost in al-Baydha in a bid to create a breach in security which could be used by militants to gain control over some areas and from there assert their territorial expansion.
After months of guerrilla war-type operations, al-Qaeda is for the second time in two years trying to secure an permanent base in Yemen, from which it is hoping to implement the second part of its plan, the creation of an Islamic Caliphate.
Officials confirmed that two soldiers and three Islamists were killed in Friday attack in al-Baydha as the military throw its entire weight in the battle, determined not to relinquish any ground against their attackers.
An official, speaking on condition of anonymity told AFP that the attack was part of an al-Qaida bid to take positions near Radda, the province capital, which al-Qaeda briefly managed to occupy last year.
