Defected General Ali mohsen al-Ahmar, who is Yemen’s most powerful military man and fierce defender of the revolution, has met with the German Deputy Ambassador, Michael Rob on Sunday. The German official also met with Yemen’s Foreign Minister, Dr Abu-Bakr al Qirbi that same day.
According to our source, Mohsen and Deputy Ambassador Rob discussed the current revolutionary escalation plan, looking at ways to diplomatically solve the current stalemate.
The General stressed the need to accelerate the power transfer process as people were getting frustrated, adding that if nothing was done, Yemen would sink into civil war. He added that in the mean time the revolution would not back down from.
Al-Qirbi who also received officials from Oman, the KSA, the UAE, the UK, the US and China alongside the German Deputy Ambassador listened to what the foreign diplomats had to say, without however giving any new inkling that the government was willing to move things forward.
He only mentioned the Ruling Party’s meeting on Tuesday, adding that president Saleh was still set on organizing “early elections” within a reasonable timeframe.
With the overall worsening situation in Yemen and the growing threat of al-Qaeda in the country’s southern regions, western nations are growing concern. As Brennan very well put it, “Yemen is a tinderbox” waiting to be engulfed in flames.
