he UN has appointed a humanitarian relief coordinator for Yemen which has been facing a humanitarian catastrophe due to the several-months armed conflict.
In an interview with the Alarabiya TV, Stephen O'Brien, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief, said the coordinator will work in cooperation with the King Salman Center for Relief and Humanitarian Works.
In the meantime, the Yemeni government is demanding the international community including the countries participating in the military intervention against the Houthi militants to give top priority to delivering relief aid to Yemenis at the moment.
According to the government and aid agencies, the armed conflict has left around 80% of the total population in need of emergency aid.
These people are facing lacks of food, medicines, fuels and other key supplies due to the ongoing conflict.
The conflict followed the ouster of the government by the Houthi militants in late 2014.
A blockade on all Yemeni sea, land and air ports has deepened the suffering.
The blockade imposed by the Saudi-led military coalition was part of the military intervention and has affected all import and export activities.
International organizations have criticized the blockade while calling for a ceasefire and urging the warring parties including the coalition to cooperate so that aid can be delivered to the Yemeni people.
