On the early hours of Monday, armed militants loyal to the Revolution took control over the 63rd Republican Guard base situated on the outskirts of the Yemeni capital, Sana'a.
Sources in the field confirmed that the tribes seized several military vehicles, weapons as well as capturing an alleged 400 soldiers.
Eye-witnesses reported that many Republican Guards were seen fleeing the scene, overwhelmed by the tribal forces.
According to a local Sheikh, the attack was triggered by the bombing of villages near Arhab by the government forces which led to the death of a 10-year-old boy, causing wild rage within the community. "The men wanted to make the regime stop once and for all. They took a hard stand to protect their families," said a tribesman who for security reasons wished to remain anonymous.
News reports on the matter have cited "hysterical airstrikes" following the capture of the camp as the government tried to retaliate against the tribes.\
Ahmed Ali Abdullah Saleh who heads the Republican Guards corpsand whom reported a few days ago that he would soon become the newly appointed Commander of the southern military sector by the president is said to be planning a wider attack on the tribes in question. These allegations could not however be independently verified.
Several sources have announced that the tribes carried out a bombing campaign against the Asama camp, near Sana'a International airport from within the 63rd base.
Furthermore, now in possession of government military equipment, the tribes did not hesitate in using anti- aircraft guns to shoot down planes which were assaulting their villages from the air.
The tribes are snow said to be advancing towards Asama, the biggest Republican Guards within the area. Newly planted landmines are however hindering their advances.
