At least two protesters were killed and ten others injured, one in critical condition, when the police dispersed thousands of people including teachers as they tried to expand the months-long antigovernment protest in the square of freedom in Taiz province.
Ma'an Al-Qirshi, a teacher, said the police used live bullets to disperse them while trying to hold a protest near the education office in Jamal St.
"They fired at us directly but we clashed with them and forced them to run away. And now were are protesting here safely," he said by telephone.
Many youths joined the teachers, who have been conducting a sit-in at the office for weeks to the salary cuts, he said.
The casualties took place a day after two teen students were killed in southern Taiz, where thousands of secondary and primary students marched to call for delaying the final exams amid the continuous unrest across the republic.
Almost 13 students were also injured including a girl at a time when the government and the opposition are trading accusations over the months-long political crisis and attempts to derail the GCC power transition deal.
Today, both the General People's Congress, the ruling party, and the Joint Meeting Parties, the opposition bloc, reiterated their commitment to the GCC plan, though they warned of plans to delay the signing or attempts to drive the country to violence.
