The UN announced on Thursday a week-long ceasefire in Yemen during which
aid will be delivered to the people affected by the months-long conflict.
It will begin on Friday night and will expire in the end of the fasting
month of Ramadan.
The government which has been staying in Saudi Arabia for months agreed to
the truce and demanded aid be given to it so that the Houthi militias don't
confiscate it or deny access to it.
Around 80% of Yemen's population are in need of emergency aid after the
months-long conflict left them to face severe shortages of supplies and
deterioration and absence of services.
The blockade on all Yemeni sea, land and air routes which was part of the
Saudi-led military intervention added to the crisis. The military operation
was launched against the Houthi militants in late March. In May, a
fragile five-day cease :-fire occurred but most of those affected
could not get aid due to persistent confrontations between the
pro-government and pro-Houthi forces.
