UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed a new envoy to Yemen as the Security Council is poised to meet on violence and ignorance of resolutions by the Houthi militant group.
Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed frim Mauritania will be Ki-moon's Special Envoy for Yemen after Jamal Benomar, the previous envoy, had stepped down.
Benomar served as the UN envoy during 2012-2014.
Ould Cheikh Ahmed will work closely with the members of the UN Security Council, the Gulf Cooperation Council, Governments in the region and other partners, as well as the UN Country Team for Yemen, a statement by spokesperson for Ki-moon said.
Meantime, the Security Council will meet on Monday on the situation in Yemen after the deadline for Houthi militants to cede power, evacuate public compounds, withdraw from cities, give up weapons and stop violence ended.
The deadline was given more than ten days ago when a new resolution on the country was passed.
The resolution blacklisted more Houthi and pro-former president officials including the leader of the Houthi group, Abdulmalik Al-Houthi, and son of former president, Ahmed Saleh.
At its upcoming meeting, the Council is expected to further sanction the Houthi group and loyalists of the former regime.
The latest resolution put Yemen under the seventy chapter of the UN charter.
It banned sending weapons to the Houthi group and asked the Saudi-led coalition to monitor Yemen's sea and air ports and deliver reports on violations.
