UN Special Adviser on Yemen Jamal Benomar arrived on Thursday in Yemen amid increasing tensions after the Houthi coup.
State media reported Benomar will meet with officials from the government and political groups to evaluate progress in the transition process especially the steps taken to implement the outcomes of the dialog conference in accordance with the Gulf Initiative.
The meetings will also deal with mechanisms for the implementation of the peace and national partnership agreement and the latest developments in the capital city of Sanaa, the reports said.
Benomar's visit, the 36th since he was assigned as the special adviser to the UN Secretary General on Yemen, came after meetings by the Security Council on the Houthi coup.
The UN has expressed its support to the legitimate president Hadi and urged Houthi militants to hand over power to the legitimate authorities.
This week, Houthi militants fought forces in the capital including those stationed at the residence of transition president Abdu Rabbu Mansour Hadi, besieged the president and premier and seized the presidential compound and key brigades of the elite forces.
The coup came months after Houthi militias seized the capital along with eight more cities.
It has drawn wide local and foreign condemnation amid warnings of serious consequences in the country.
