Local official in the south-eastern province of Hadhramawt confirmed reports which alleged that a soldier perished by the hands of armed militant, in a raid against an outpost near Tarim, the regional capital.
“Unidentified armed men”, read a report attacked a military camp near Tarim, leading to the death of one soldier.
According to a preliminary report unidentified armed men ambushed a military vehicle carrying military equipment and ammunitions as it approached its point of destination in Tarim. Three soldiers were also injured as a result of the shoot-out.
While at first officials noted they did not to know whether or not the attack was motivated and carried out by al-Qaeda operatives since Hadhramawt is also home to determined southern secessionists, as well as disgruntled tribal in opposition of the state, they said the attack bore al-Qaeda hallmarks.
Bearing in mind that a Yemeni military expert warned earlier this month that al-Qaeda had managed to established strongholds throughout the province of Hadhramawt, most officials are merely awaiting confirmation of al-Qaeda’s responsibility in today’s death.
Regardless of which group stands to gain from such targeting of the military, security experts have once again warned against dissident groups’ advances in Yemen, stressing that the frequency and violence of each attack only underscored the magnitude of Yemen’ security crisis.
Rich in natural resources with a wide opening onto the sea, Hadhramawt represents a coveted strategic prize for al-Qaeda, one security experts have warned has been largely overlooked by the Defence Ministry.
