Yemen Transport Minister Waed Bathaib confirmed Tuesday that the United States of America had decided to lift all restrictions against Yemen air freight, thus allowing cargo from Yemen to enter the US.
Both Saba news and September 26 relayed the following statement from the minister, "The Transport Ministry's Undersecretary was notified of the US decision to lift the ban on the US-bound air cargo shipments originating in Yemen by US Acting Secretary of Homeland Security during their meeting on the sidelines of the 38th session of the General Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) held in Montreal, Canada."
In view of the US decision and in light of Yemen's ongoing efforts to secure and authenticate all its cargo in keeping with international safety guidelines the International Aviation Organization has called for the European Union to lift its ban on Yemeni cargo.
Minister Bathaib urged US Acting Secretary of Homeland Security to inform both the EU and Canada of its department decision in a bid to fast-track all restrictions issued against Yemen and permit all activities to resume as normal.
Following the discovery in 2011 of explosives within several packages originating from Yemen, US Homeland Security decided to ban all air freight from the impoverished nation, not satisfied that Yemen was conducted enough security checks before dispatching its cargo.
Canada and the EU immediately followed suit, worry terrorists would use Yemen' security vacuum to target its interests.
Ever since this incident Yemen has worked hard to rehabilitate its international transport industry.
