Five Yemeni nationals, some of whom were arrested illegally by the Ethiopian government for years, told Yemen Post the Yemeni Embassy in Adis Ababa continues to abandon their case.
Mohammed Shaibah, a victim who has been behind bars for nearly three years, said that the Yemeni Foreign Minister Abu Bakr Al-Qirbi is purposely refusing to help the imprisoned Yemenis in Ethiopia because of personal issues. "The minister needs to put personal issues aside and deal with us as Yemenis who had their rights stripped by a foreign country," Shabiah told Yemen Post.
Shaibah was detained illegally and was not given a court hearing. It's unclear how long he will remain in Ethiopian prisons as this October he will enter his fourth year.
Last month, The Yemen Post received confirmation that the Ethiopian government has been illegally holding Yemeni nationals inside an Addis Ababa prison without a court trial or hearing.
Shaibah told the Yemen Post that he had been threatened by prison officials and that all his rights are being violated. He has been denied any contact with human rights organizations. Numerous sources confirmed the violations and injustice against Shaibah.
"I am being held illegally and I am begging the Yemeni government and human rights organizations to help me received a fair trial before I die in prison," said Shaibah.
"I was not taken to court or even given the basic right of receiving a fair trial and it has now been three years of illegal imprisonment."
He said that Yemen Foreign Minister Abubakr Al-Qirbi has done nothing to ensure his release or be given a fair trial. "The foreign minister is aware of my imprisonment but he is busy giving care to his own children and ignoring the rights of Yemenis," he added.
He said that he does not know how long he is expected to stay in prison since he is being held illegally and that he would stay for years to come if right organizations do not intervene.
Shaibah was taken from his home in October of 2011.
He said that the Yemeni embassy in Ethiopia has ignored his call for help.
