A day after the issuance of a decree announcing his demotion from the leadership of the 1st Armored Division, Gen. Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar, Yemen most powerful military man, welcomed President Abdo Rabbo Mansour Hadi's latest decree by renewing his allegiance to the Republic and the presidency.
After decades in power, Gen. Al-Ahmar, a man who back in March 2011 rose against former President Ali Abdullah Saleh to side with the revolutionary movement, fulfilled on Thursday his promise to Yemen, peacefully stepping down from his power position to make room for the country's next generation of leaders.
Early into 2011 revolution, Gen. al-Ahmar asserted that his only wish was to serve his country, Yemen, to the best of his abilities and in accordance with the wishes of the people.
Although mocked by his opponents, often branded a liar as many warned the general was only trying to maneuver his way through the Arab Spring movement, trying to survive the revolutionary storm , Gen.al-Ahmar put his detractors to shame, graciously bowing to President Hadi's will.
Now a part of Yemen history, many revolutionaries will remember Gen. Al-Ahmar as a man of the people, the general of the revolution and a patriot to the nation.
Many believe that if Gen. Al-Ahmar had not defected from the former regime in favor of the revolution, Yemenis might not have had the strength to fight off ex-President Saleh.
Maybe the tipping point of the revolution, the general's decision to join the revolution certainly change Yemen's power play in favor of the people, giving revolutionaries a momentum which from the moment on would not die out.
Gen. Al-Ahmar will now serve as special military adviser to President Hadi.
