Amid reports of violence in Aden - southern seaport city - and news four separatists were shot dead by the security forces and a dozen more injured, Amnesty International - prominent rights group - called on the Yemeni government to immediately put an end to "such repression against southerners."
Anne Harrison, Vice-President of Amnesty International for the Middle East and North Africa said in an address to the press "the southern movement and its followers have have the right to peacefully demonstrate ... The government should not impede on such right."
She strongly condemned the use of live ammunition against unarmed and peaceful civilian, stressing the state should have refrained from dispatching so many Central Security Forces personnel in the streets of Aden.
Witnesses reported on Thursday the Central Security Forces had literally cordoned off protesters, menacing and weapons at the ready even though non of the demonstrators had shown any sign of incoming violence.
Harrison warned that no government could ever justify the "indiscriminate shooting of unarmed and peaceful civilians."
Amnesty International referred to a recent incident in July 4th, 2012, when the Central Security Forces opened fire - snipers - at a crowd of protesters in Aden, killing three people, saying repressive policies had no place in a democratic civil state.
To further reinforce its theory Sana'a is repressing the southern movement, Amnesty International brough up case of Fairouz Ahmed Nasser. In October 2012, Security Forces stormed the house of Fairouz Nasser Ahmed in Aden in an apparent attempt to arrest some wanted men. According to the statement given by her family to the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation, security forces opened fire indiscriminately, killing Fairouz in her bedroom. She and others in the house are not believed to have posed a risk to the lives of security forces.
"Time and again in Yemen, the security forces, particularly Central Security Forces, have shown total disregard for human life, killing and injuring peaceful protesters and bystanders," said Harrison.
She further urged the central government to respect international policing standard , emphasizing on Yemenis' right to peacefully demonstrate and express their political opinions and views.
