A senior government official told Yemen Post that only a few number of oil companies are supporting social activities and projects, and those who do are limiting their efforts.

"Oil and gas companies around the world give very much and give a lot back to society. In Yemen, its nearly the opposite. Those efforts are not complete and companies resort to giving officials financial support rather than supporting society," a senior Ministry of Oil official.

Among the major international oil companies operating in Yemen include Canadian Nexen, Total, DNO, Calvalley Petroleum, and OXY. The ministry official said that none of the above companies can be seen as a role model in it's Yemen operation, and only offer simple social projects.

Residents in blocks where oil pipelines pass through or operate in complain that oil and gas companies do not live up to the expectations and because of Yemen's weak government, they are left to operate freely not looking at their responsibilities towards residents in areas they operate in.

Before the end of September, Yemen Post will launch it's monthly visit program to areas where oil companies operate.

The Yemen Post will soon survey citizens opinion and evaluate their views on how oil companies operate and give back to society.
