Secretary General of the Yemeni Socialist Party Dr. Yasin Saeed Noman escaped an assassination attempt in downtown the capital Sanaa late on Monday, Aleshteraki website, the mouthpiece of the socialist party, reported.
According to media sources, unidentified gunmen set up an illegal checkpoint near the Saba roundabout and when the car of Noman arrived they wanted to check it.
“One of the gunmen opened the car and when Noman realized there was something unusual he closed the door of his car and ordered the driver to go ahead,” one of the sources said.
The gunmen then opened fire at the car and in the air but no one was hurt, the sources said.
Noman was on his way home after a meeting by the World Bank in Movinpick Hotel. He described the incident as part of alarming insecurity in the country.
The assassination plot came two days after the car of transport minister Waed Bathib came under heavy fire in the port city of Aden shortly after the Yemeni state-owned Gulf of Aden ports corporation decided to cancel a deal with DP World.
In recent months, security has deteriorated in key Yemeni cities including the capital Sanaa where Al-Qaeda has carried out the deadliest ever suicide bombings in what appeared to be retaliation for its defeat.
