Rallies support cancelation of DP World contract

Massive rallies organized Monday in Taiz in which protesters expressed their support to a recent decision regarding the cancelation of a contract with Dubai Port World, the world's third-largest port.
They further condemned the assassination attempt against the Transportation Minister, Waeed Bazeeb, who survived an assassination hours after the board of Gulf of Aden Ports Corp denounced the cancelation of the contract.
The board of Gulf of Aden Ports Corp cancelled on Saturday the agreement with DP World. However, a DP World spokeswoman told Reuters on Sunday "We do not comment on media speculation."
Demands of revoking the agreement signed in 2008 increased after Yemeni economists and politicians described the contract as politically-motivated and that it made Aden Port more weaker than before.
DP World has been charged with not committing to the agreement's articles, and deliberately disturbing Aden port due its fears of competition DP world in the region.
DP World and the Yemen Gulf of Aden Port Corp formed a partnership back in 2008 to operate and develop the container facilities at the Port of Aden within five years.
The strategic location of Aden port at the mouth of the Red Sea once made it a vital stop for ships bound for the Suez Canal.
In June the country's anti-corruption body said it would ask parliament to cancel the deal with DP World, allegedly because the company had failed to carry out investment projects on time.
